Teaching kids how to express gratitude and appreciation for others can be a great way to promote healthy social skills and mental health practices in early childhood. Knowing how to express gratitude and appreciation for others helps children relate to their peers and teaches them to recognize positive qualities within themselves and others. It also helps promote connectedness between peers and encourages the development of empathy.
When a child learns how to express appreciation for others, they also learn how to relate to others positively and build social skills for healthy relationships. This helps to improve self-esteem and fosters a healthy self-image.
About This Worksheet
A fun and easy exercise for children to learn how to express gratitude is to introduce them to the Thank You worksheet. On the Thank You worksheet, the child is given 4 sentence-completion exercises to aid in learning how to communicate gratitude and express positive qualities they see in others. They are also provided with an art exercise to promote healthy expression.
By learning how to express appreciation and recognition for positive qualities in their peers, the child learns how to empathize and socialize constructively.
The Thank You worksheet is intended for children up to 8 years old. It is a group activity that involves splitting group members up into pairs. It also requires materials for drawing and coloring.
Instructions
Pair each child in the group with a partner. It would be beneficial to partner the children with peers they do not typically socialize with.
Instruct each child to complete each sentence to express appreciation toward their partner. Then, allow the children to draw a picture of their favorite things to share with their partners.
After each child has finished their sentences and drawings, have them share what they wrote and drew with their partner. Allow time at the end of the session for the group members to talk about the experience and what they learned about their partner. Encourage each client to share one sentence they wrote about their partner for the class.
